Xilinx Switches to TSMC for 28nm FPGA Supply
February 28, 2010
California-based programmable platform provider Xilinx has opted for Taiwanese TSMC's 28nm FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) foundry service, Taiwan's United Evening News reported on February 23. Xilinx's adoption of TSMC service represents a significant shift in the company's foundry strategies, switching from TSMC's arch-rival UMC, a main foundry partner of Xilinx's for years. For the supply of 28nm FPGAs, Xilinx has decided to enlist the services of TSMC and Samsung Electronics, and both companies are slated to begin sample shipments by year-end 2010. UMC, meanwhile, is expected to continue manufacturing 65nm and 40nm parts for Xilinx.
